What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a slender titanium screw called a post that replaces the root of a missing tooth. The implant can then be topped with a crown to give you a replacement tooth, or used to help support a bridge or a set of dentures. Implants are strong, durable, and last a lifetime with proper care. With implants, you’ll be able to smile, bite, and chew without worry or problems!

The Implant Process

Getting dental implants typically takes at least six months. However, the results can last a lifetime! While each case can be different, a standard implant process is as follows:

You may need a bone graft before you can begin the implant process. This is done to build up your jaw bone so that it can support your new implants.

Once your jaw bone is ready to receive implants, your dentist or oral surgeon will place the implants by gently inserting them into your jaw. They’ll fill in the gaps where the roots of your missing teeth used to be.

Your body will need roughly four months for your new implants to fully fuse with your jaw bone. Don’t worry — this is not uncomfortable!

Once your implants are fully integrated into your jaw bone, your dentist will place a titanium abutment on top. This serves as a link between the implant and the crown.

Finally, your dentist will place a porcelain crown on top of each implant. Your implants can also be used to support a bridge or dentures.

Why Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide the strongest and most durable foundation for replacing missing teeth. With dental implants, you’ll be able to smile, bite, and chew again without feeling awkward or self-conscious. Plus, your implants can last a lifetime with proper care, while the crowns on top typically last a decade or more.
